Smartphones contribute 11% per year to the total worldwide ‘digital’ energy consumption, 90% of which is produced during production

If you think the latest device is expensive, here’s how much it really costs. It takes 13 tonnes of water and 18 sqm of land to extract rare earth metals, to manufacture one single smartphone 

Furthermore, the rare metals used in manufacturing have very low recycling rates (e.g. Indium, Tantalum and Germanium < 1%) and these rare metals are often deemed conflict metals, funding oppressive regimes and militia

  Buying a new phone consumes as much energy as using an existing phone for an entire decade
